Religion Policy

- In 1533, Mary became queen and at once made Catholicism the state religion. Mary suspected Elizabeth of plotting with the Protestants to gain the throne and had her imprisoned for two months in the Tower of London. When Mary died, there were two claimants to get the throne. If Elizabeth did not get it, the next in line was Mary Stuart of Scotland, a Catholic. If she won Scotland and England would be joined to France. In religious matters Elizabeth was in the middle of Protestants and Catholics. She restored Protest service but retained many features of Catholicism.
